Pops & Creaks

Hey all. I would like some help on where to start in trouble shooting the pops, creaks, & squeaks in the front end of my '89 YJ. It drives fine. Doesn't pull or drift. The steering is quiet. It seems to be coming from the suspension but I don't seem to be able to create the sounds with it up on jacks.

I'm willing to be it's the leaf spring bushings. They'll squeek like crazy. You might also check the sway bar & trac bar bushings (if still equipped).

Basically anything rubber is suspect.

You may need to crawl under the front end with a grease gun in hand and lube it up. If you see a zerk fitting, squeeze in some grease! I'd be willing to bet a lot of that noise will go away. Anything that is left will be easier to diagnose.

^^ X2 on this. Was the main reason that I switched all of my leaf spring bushings out for the grease-able kind. If its the same as what happened to mine, the bolt seized in the metal bushing and what you are hearing is the bolt rubbing in the shackle hole.

Once replaced, not only is it quiet, but it gives a lot more flex to the suspension when its off-road.
