posi lok

Anyone running posi lok i got a question,when i pull out my posi lok i have to twist it a bit to get it to lock in.Is that normal or should it just pull out and be engaged???Mine has a red push-pull button.

yburn, it sounds like you're running a vernier cable like this one:



And, that's how they work. Most fire trucks use them to spool up the engine when the PTO is engaged to power the pump. You turn them to get them to engage. You can just push the red button and pull it on and push it off. This is the kind of cable I'm thinking of getting to use as a hand throttle.

Ccain is absolutely right on the fire truck and the twisting part. There are 2 ways to use it. You can twist it counterclockwise to engage it or push the button in and pull the knob and release the button before letting off the knob. You can then either twist it clockwise to disengage it or push the button and then push the knob in. My jeep has one for cruise....err excuse me auxillary throttle. And I use them all the time on our fire trucks.

ya i push the button in and pull it out and then twist it to engage the 4wd,then untwist and push back in to disengage!!I thought mabey it was jacked up b/c of the twisting, wasn't sure if it should just engage by pulling it out. thanks guys!

Be careful not to apply too much force, when twisting it! You'll bend or break something.
The twist feature can easily apply too much force.

It will engage, by just pulling it if you hold the red button in.

Well that, & the splines need to line up first.

I usually do it with a slow roll, & sometimes with slow "S" turns on the steering wheel.

This helps with both engage & disengage.

When you installed the posi-loc did you replace the shift fork too? If you didnt then the shift fork probably has some wear where it mounts to the cable and it allows for side to side play, causing it to bind alittle bit. So dont put too much pressure on it because its made of white metal and its not the strongest. Also make sure that you have lube in the there to help it slide freely. I also need to twist mine alittle bit and it helps if Im rolling to engage and disengage my front axle.

I was smart enough to make a template of the gasket, before I bolted it all up.
I have a roll of gasket paper, to make a new one if the one that's in there doesn't come off in one piece.

So I'll take a look at the stock fork, when I get a chance. I can always put the iron one in with the new plastic bushing. Thanks for the heads up!

ya it has side to side play but the rest of the fork looks new,I bought it was already in there,but it kinda seems like the C clips need a washer or something between them and the fork,is that mean its wore????

Ok the shift fork was wore it was cracked in 3 places!!!! good thang i was putting in a new one, now everything is working great!!!

I just bought an 87 YJ and the kid before me put in a posi lok w/out changing out the shift fork. I plan on doing that this weekend but while I am at it I was wondering...

What the hell do I do with all these vacum hoses? They seem to just be hanging there, for the most part, do I need to seal them up or anything, or can I just rip them out and keep them/share them as spare parts?

just seal em up its faster then trying to rip em out hey were would u pick up the verner cable like that i'm making my own posi lock and i need a cable like that instead of the choke cable i have

I found another trick to try, if it doesn't want to unlock.

I was trying to get it out of 4WD on Saturday & it wasn't cooperating.

I just backed up a few feet & it pushed back in, easy as pie!

Trick is to make sure the collar isn't binding while moving the cable.
