Possible Water Pump issue

Recently, my little 4 banger has started acting a little funny. If I had to guess, I think my Water Pump may be on its way out. At idle, I have this increasingly louder rattle/scratching noise that I believe may be the bearings starting to wear.
Also, it whines while accelerating. It hasn't been running hot, nor has any coolant leaked, but I have noticed a hit in MPG.

Are there any tips, or important things I should know dealing with a water pump?

if you're sure it's the water pump, it's pretty simple: fan, belt, hose and pump
make sure you get a new, quality pump and clean all the old gasket material off

it could also be the alternator or idler pulley making the noise
try spinning each one by hand with the belt off

Timberwolf, I am getting ready to change out my water pump too. Do you have any advice on who makes a quality pump? I was going to order the Omix-Ada pump from Quadratec. Are there any brands I should stay away from? This will be my first water pump swap so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Take the belt off and rotate all the pulleys and feel for and listen for any noise or rough feeling bearings. When waterpump bearings fail it tends to make a mess, tearing up belts, fans and radiators. As stated before a new water pump is the only way to go, a reputable parts store brand is completely acceptable. Also a new thermostat and the proper mix of antifreeze is strongly advised.
