Proper techinque to clean the engine

As you can see, my engine is pretty filthy. Dust grease and oil everywhere from a leaking valve cover gasket which my dad and i just replaced. I want to get it cleaned up and looking nice, but I'm not sure how to do it. Is there any proper way to do it or should i just get some soap and water and start scrubbing away? Any help is appreciated.

I've seen worse.
Go to your local car wash.
Cover the Distributor cap with a plastic bag.
Spray the engine down with 1/2 can of engine degreaser and let soak for 10 minutes. Then power wash with a pressure washer.
Repeat with the second 1/2 can of degreaser.
It's okay if the ECM gets a little wet but try not to blast it outright as electronics and water are never good friends.
Air dry on the freeway for 10 minutes when done.

I use Gunk brand engine cleaner. Spray it on a warm engine let it sit a while and use the garden hose to clean it off. Then I use rags, Armor all and wipe everything down.
Takes a while and I keep up on it.
