Question About Soft Tops and Frames

Question for the collective wisdom...

My recently acquired '89 YJ (first Jeep after over 40 years of driving and riding most other stuff) has a fairly worn soft top that may or may not be economically feasible to repair. The frame appears to be pretty decent, as do the convertible upper half doors and the window inserts.

I see a few soft top skins for sale around here for decent prices for just the skins. My big question is: Is the frame usable across different brand tops? Or does each top manufacturer use their own proprietary frame with its own specific snap and zipper locations/arrangments?

I got a great almost new bikini top with the Jeep and some extras like the door rails to help seal the upper doors at the windshield frame. But I want to have a servicable soft top to protect the whole inside of the tub as I gradually go through and clean up/fix up little details. And to keep some of these torrential FL rains out without having to hide the Jeep in the garage.

So, is a frame just a frame for the various soft tops?

TIA

Most frames, be it stock or aftermarket, only fit the top that they were designed to use. but you can buy replacement tops for your hardware Thats what I did for my factory frame

You need to identify the top first, and go from there.
Here's a page that may help.

If it's a factory top, you can buy a "Replace-A-Top" which will reuse the hardware, but give you all new fabric and windows.

If it's a replacement Supertop, you -may- be able to buy Replacement Skins (depends on the year).

If it's a budget brand, like Pavement Ends, you may not be able to replace the fabric.

If you need to replace the whole thing, there are lots of options.
