Question about tops

I just bought my YJ a couple Weeks ago. One of the first things I want to replace is my soft top. There are a few places on mine cut from POs, upper half doors and windows on the top itself.

I've seen the hardware free tops for the TJ but that's it. Anyone know where if anywhere they are available for a YJ?

If not I'd rather go topless and get a hard top and full doors. Are YJ tops and doors all that will fit? Or maybe parts from a CJ would swap out?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Where are you located I have the same jeep and was thinking about getting rid of all it needs is a back window. Have had it and never used it. If you choose to get a soft top I got the best top frame for 1000 and it will fit any top I wanna put on.

the late '80s CJ7 hard tops are the same as a wrangler. thats what i have on mine.you have to have full doors for a hard top tho, the half doors with the soft uppers dont seal well on the hard top. Rampage is the maker of the frameless top. rampage.com i believe. i think you can also get it from morris4x4.com. i dont think the frameless was designed to be a fulltime top. i had one on mine for a summer and it needs a lot to be desired. since it doesnt have a frame it isnt "tight" and if it rains water tends to puddle on the top making you push up from the inside to remove the puddle. its ok as long as you are moving in the rain, but i didnt care for it, gave it away this spring.

I have the frameless softtoper top it is designed to be used with full doors but I have half doors with bestop supertop upper soft doors. I don't drive in the rain much so I'm not too worried about the doors leaking but havnt had a prob yet, water dosent pool on the top either. But if you have a stock soft top and want to go frameless, then the rampage top would b what you want. The pooling of water on the top can happen to just about any soft top but there's a quick and easy fix for that.

Softtopper is an excellent choice if you already have full steel doors, but if you have the half doors, your best bet is the Rampage/Viking frameless top that is available for YJ's. The quality is excellent. It is a product we sell, so if you have questions, feel free to get in touch.

If the hard top will work, how about the doors of the CJ7?

Firstly we need to know what type of soft top framework you have. There are a few different frames out there. First there is the original Factory framework:

Then there is the Bestop Supertop framework:

The others are basically a copy of the factory frame style. What does your frame look like?

I'll have to look after work. But there is a BesTop sticker on the back window panel. But the reason I was looking into the frameless tops is I hate the idea of having to remove all of that stuff when I want to take the top all the way off.

As for needing full doors, I really had rather have some. I figured since I will have to paint soon that I might look at all my options in the used market and just have them painted with the tub and half doors so the color matches. Most of my friends that have body work done have had a hard time getting body shops to match the paint right.

I live in a small town in North East Mississippi. That would be quite a drive.

hard doors are nice. so is a hard top but that sucker is super heavy by yourself. not so much heavy but awkward. that softopper is the next top on my list of things. its badass looking and from what i read, seals well.

When I was a teenager, my Step-Dad had a 95 YJ we ran with the hard top all year long(or just took it off). The easiest thing I found for us to do, whether it be one or both of us, is we found a spot in the garage to park the jeep every time. Went and got 4 of the ring screws to put in the ceiling, and 4 ratchet straps. We put 2 on the front half either side and 2 in the back. So when you wanted to take it off by yourself you just had to unhook the latches and ratchet away. Worked great. Too bad I don't have a pull in garage like that anymore.

Bestop makes tops for both frame rail setups. That's why you have to look and tell us which it is. FWIW I can have my Supertop and frame off in 2 minutes or less

At this point you have a couple options:

1. Replace a top from Bestop:

Bestop 51120-15 - Bestop® Replace-a-top™ with Half Door Skins for 88-95 Jeep® Wrangler YJ - Quadratec

2. Soft Topper

(Rampage has a less expensive soft top replacement, although IMO it's not as high quality as Bestop)

Another option if you don't use the rear seat much if at all, is to go with a Half top, it uses your existing factory frame. the whole rear window section can be removed.

I looked at frameless tops for a while last night. Cheapest one that I found was a quadratec for $599. My friend got one for his TJ for just over $400. I say we protest this YJ discrimnination.

New Best Top Door Skins

I have a 2000 Wrangler and installed new door skins today. I need to know how much of the gasket to trim off. The new skins have about 8" extra and i dont want to mess up and cut them too short ! Any help would be appreciated.

Try checking with the TJ guys. You're in the YJ section.

Might want to check with vendors on this forum for better pricing... I know someone who sells them for $150 less than that. And regular soft tops for even cheaper. Just sayin'
