Questions to someone with a D35 Superkit

Im looking into getting a super 35 kit. Im just looking for some feedback from someone who has owned and wheeled with them. Pretty much the good, the bads, and stuff to look out for.

I got the Yukon 30 spline CroMo Axles and Detroit from RandysRingandPinion about 9 years ago. Ran it in a D35 bolt-in axle in my 88 XJ for 6 years with 31's. I then swapped the axle into my 99 XJ and ran it with 33's. I wheel often, and in heavy rock a few times a year, as well as a daily driver. Last year I broke a shock mount and leaf spring, which bent the housing. I put the axles and Detroit into an MJ housing and I'm still running it today.

I have had good luck with the D35's with up to 33" tires. I weld every one of them. The biggest problem I have seen is the axle tubes bending if wheeled a lot. I am not saying that they are a great axle, and I have seen my share grenade and break axle shafts, but not on my rigs. I don't pound on mine, but wheel often. With the rear locked I don't have to beat it too had to get where I wanna go.
The 8.8 from a Ford Explored would be money better spent. You can buy one already with gears and a locker for not too much more than you will spend on the 35 kit of you have to pay to get everything done. I can't remember the name of the company, but they are from Raleigh N.C. (east coast gears or something like that)

I really want to do a Ford 8.8 swap. But I am in the Navy and live in the barracks. I have no space to keep the axle for prep it or anything for the swap besides the hobby shop. And i cant keep it there. So the D35 kit will be easier for me giving my situation as of now. Unless anyone here Live in the Hanford-Lemoore California are that want to help me out?

I would seriously try to do the 8.8 swap over dumping money into a POS axle. You're going to wind up with an axle that's 3x as strong and you won't have to worry about on moderate offroad tires.

I have a D35 with 27 spline Alloy USA axles, powertrax and re-geared to 4.10. Not a daily driver but wheeled every weekend and drove for half of the week and have not had one issue with it. Seems like a very sound setup to me and works just fine if you cant do the 8.8, does quite well in all kinds of terrain I might add. Gonna cost a little more then a basic 8.8 swap but I think its worth it.

I got the Detroit super 35 kit. Does good no complaints. It's a locker, just remember that. Parking lots are harder to cruise through because it will start to lock and unlock then people start looking... I'm pretty rough on mine, like grabbing second and barking the tires. I run 37 12.50s. As for people calling it junk, call it what you want... It's not the only rear end that fails. If something breaks, fix it instead of making your "Jeep" a frankenstein and needing to write down a list of all the different parts you have on it. I trust my axles to get me there, through it, and back.

This is almost the exact set up I'm trying to get how much lift do u have? Sorry for jacking the thread

I've had my plain ole 35 for three years now and have treated it like crap on and offroad (including 10"wheels with 2.5" of backspacing) and I'm still waiting for something to break. I'm still of the opinion of if it ain't broke don't fix it. Everyone cry's about the 35 being bad but you couldn't prove it by me. And I live 30 minutes from the offroad park so it gets treated bad often. Including teaching my 16yo son to drive on and offroad.

GAte53 I feel the same way. I have seen 1 ton stuff break when my 'lil 35 didn't, and the last outing a guy in our group broke an 8.8 axle and got towed back to camp in reverse 3 wheel style
The super 35 kit was made for a reason, and if they didn't sell them they wouldn't be available. Like I said before the tubes are weak, and that is the worst thing about them to me
