Ok first off been back from Iraq for couple weeks now and been busy on all my toys. The jeep is now home and sporting 33X10.50R15 TSL Radials. Had some problems with it starting and traced it to a carb gasket leak. Well since the jeep came with new intake and carb decided that now was good of time as any to do this swap. Well that is going slow do to waiting on dealer only parts. With this swap I decided to do a TFI upgrade and "Nutter Bypass". This is were the problem starts. I am confused on how to do the bypass upgrade. My chilton manual says that the ignition module is located by the battery buy I am unsure as to which one it is. I have also read that it is under the coolant overflow tank but i dont see any wires going there that match the orange and purple wires from the distributor. I am seriously confused now since I cant even complete a "simple" upgrade. Any and all help would be great!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome home, and thanks for your service in Iraq.
Do a search on nutter bypass, there are plenty of good sites which describe how to do it, better than I could here. But, you are on the right track. The wires coming out of the distributer change colors after entering and leaving the computer, you have to trace them out, which means opening up the wireing harness. But, do a search with goggle and come back with any questions. It's pretty easy to do and also pretty easy to get confussed doing it. Chiltons is not going to help you much when doing this conversion. Remember to twist the wires just like they are going to the computer when you bypass it and run them directly to the module.
Thanks for you help and support. I have found the ignition module under the coolant overflow tank and determined that the color change for the orange wire is light green with a black stripe and the purple wire in dark green with a white stripe. My question now is that in tracing wires down i found that the dark green wire with a white stripe splices and becomes 3 dark green wires with white stripes. Is this what I am supposed to be bypassing or have I not got the right wires?????? Once again thanks a bunch for the help jeeps are a new breed of animal to me and I am jumping in with both feet!!
Seems like every year uses different colored wires, mine is an 87 so, they are different. Best way it to follow the wires from the distributer back to the computer, then follow the wires back form the module and you should be able to figure it out from there. At least that's what I ended up doing. I also remove about 5 lbs of additional wires after I de-smog the thing. Sorry I can't be more help, but, I"m not famaliar with the 89
WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!!! Got all the wiring done up on the jeep. So the TFI ignition is in and completed, "Nutter Bypass" done, Offenhauser intake on, Holley on an operational. Now has manual choke. Needs little fine tuning but wow what a difference these upgrades made. Don't know which made the biggest improvement but I do know that before any of them the jeep would almost fall on its face at 3000 rpm but now will go upto 5000 without problems just got to get the idle set rite and will be ready for trail testing. Thanks again for all the help that ya'll have provided.
