Radiator leaking-help

Hello Jeepers, time to help me out again,
This time the radiator has decided to leak on me. It was leaking profusely at the top end of the lower radiator hose. I naturally drained the coolant and changed the radiator hose thinking that was it and called it a day. Two hours later, I went on to check the Jeep and it had leaked again, this time it was the new fluids that I just filled in. After hours of trying to find the source I have come to a conclusion: there is drain hole( or not sure what to call it) facing the radiator, right on top of the radiator fan spindle unit(hydraulic?)....on the engine block. Hard to explain so here is the picture….



What is this hole for and why is it leaking now?
Rewind a week before: There was mud caked in there so I used a putty to clean and I believe that is when I must have unclogged this pore. But was there a rubber nob ( should be less than 2/10 of a centimeter) in there? Or is it the water pump having issues. Please let me know, the Jeep is totally out of commission as of this point. Smog is coming up soon...

That is your water pump leaking, not your radiator. Its leaking at the weep hole, a common place.

Replace your water pump, make sure you fully bleed your cooling system, adn you should be ok.

Thanks 2xs, how hard is it to replace the water pump? Any pictures? instructions etc...Total newbie at this.

Replacing the water pump is a bitc*. But do-able. You have to tear the front end off as far as rad/fan/pulleys/possibly timing belt cover etc. It's a half-day job if you research it right or buy a manual but the new gasket/pump needs to set a day after you rtv it. When I had better employment a year ago the local mechanic charged like $150 for everything. Water pump is prolly an $80 part which means he had 3 hrs of labor or was a nice guy....

the new gasket and RTV does not need to sit, as soon as it is together, fill her up/bleed the coolant, and drive away.......

It's not that hard at all. The first thing you need to know.

Do you have a reverse rotation water pump or not.

Just be sure to tell the part guy that you either have a serpentine belt or v rib belt.

Thing you have to take out to replace water pump

Radiator
Fan clutch
Belts
And then the water pump.

It's a easy job no special tools needed just your two hands, a socket wrench and maybe a phillips and flat head

Thanks, do I need to pull the radiator out as well? I was reading the manual that I just got my hands on and it did not mention pulling radiator out(or I must have mis read it!!!).

Must have been a nice guy, local mechanic here(NorCal) are not that pocket friendly.

You do not have to remove the radiator, just be carefull when you remove the pump so you dont put a hole in it...

And no, us Nor-Cal mechanics are not cheap, everything is expensive here and we need to feed our families...

Also, you do not have a serpentine belt setup, make sure you tell the dope behind the counter at your parts shop.

Thanks, I had an offline question to you though, why is the labor rate $100-120? I mean you certainly are not taking that home, so where is the money going to? Insurance? What is the split here?

I have a 1990 Sahara and I just did the water pump on Friday. I learned by trial and error the haynes manual was of no help at all. I would suggest removing the radiator makesworking allot easier. I will try to remember the steps. I normally like to do step by step how to's with pictures. First disconnect the battery. Second drain fluid from bottom of radiator. There is a screw on the bottom left of the radiator. Next remove both lower and upper radiator hoses. Next remove radiator there are six screws, three on each side. The passenger side will require deep wall sockets. remove radiator. Next I released the belt tensioner next to the alternator. Now this next step might not be the best way but it worked for me. Remove all bolts and nuts attached to the power steering pump. Once all are out it will kind of fall out of place. There are three bolts on the bracket on the left of the power steering pump. Now to remove the fan can be tricky. The easy way is buy a fan clutch wrench which wil hold the fan in place and then just loosen the four bolts till you can turn them with your hand. The second harder way is take a large screw drive and wedge it between to of the bolts, then loosen one of the bolts. Continue this process till you have loosened all for bolts. Remove the four bolts by hand. Pull fan off. Now you can remove the bolts from the water pump. Remove the water pump. Now I took some sand paper and sanded off the surface. Now you can replace the water pump. Reassemble. On the water pump you will need IIRC a 1/2" socket wrench or breaker bar to position the steering pump so that the refill cap is perfectly horizontal. The tear down should only take 30-45 mins. It took me 2.5 hours with trial and error. The whole process should take you 2 hours at most. OH i forgot, the new water pump might not come with four new bolts the the fans screws on to. These bolts have different threads on each side. An easy way to remove these bolts is to take two nuts and screw the only the way down. Then take a wrench and unscrew the top nut which will remove the bolt. Sorry if I missed anything or vague I am going off memory.

I take home $25/hr
The shop makes the rest, Rent in Cali is high, figure 4-5K/Month for a 2 stall shop, add utilities, add licenses, add... you get the picture.

Im not saying 120/hr is justified, but stuff is expensive.

Honestly, your explanation is much better than the manual, just awesome!!!Thanks.
I only have one other question. When I remove the alternator belt the next belt is the power assist for the steering (may be a little different from power steering). It appears to have no adjustment screws at all. So crow bar it in place when putting it back?

When you pull the radiator out give it a good ole flushing with the water hose.

I did that and must say I got some nasty stuff out of mine.

always a way

There will always be a way to adjust the belt. It is in the power steering pump setup I believe. If I remember right, there is an asjustment bolt under neath the pump.

correct.....it's really not that hard a job to replace the water pump....any parts house should have one for 30 bucks or so.......and since you're going to lose your coolant anyway, might as well remove the radiator for more working room, AND to avoid damaging it in the water pump replacement....good luck

Mine was $79.00 from Morris 4x4 for the kind on my Jeep and on his. Naturally I have the Jeep with the more expensive parts. Might be cheaper other places I go to Morris as it is 5 minutes from my house. I also bought the Peak coolant system flush and flushed the whole system. I also used "Water Wetter", I have used it in all on my vehicles with great results.

Quick update, PROBLEM RESOLVED!!!!I bought a reman/refurb pump from Kragen's for $18.
All is well so far....
