Ramsey winch

What are y'all's thoughts on Ramsey winches? I just got one from my father-in-law that he had out in his barn. Idk how old it is but it looks like its a 8000 lbs winch. A little much to put on the front of a yj?

Some of the best built winches in the industry. Built just up the road from me in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their facility is just down the road from the Tulsa International Raceway.

Easy way to tell the age is by the color of the letters. If it has red letters, it's an older winch. If it has blue lettering, it's a newer winch.

8k is perfect for a Jeep. Better to be too big than too small. I wish I could afford one, but when the time comes, I'll prolly have to go with a Mile Marker due to funds.

Oh yeah. That's an old winch. I bet it's every bit of 30 years old. Better built than anything you could buy today. A good coat of paint & new cable will go a long way too.

On 2nd thought, it's a piece of junk & you don't need it. I'll take it off your hands so you won't have to deal with it. LOL!!

8,000 lbs. is the minimum size that I would put on the front of a YJ. A good rule of thumb to remember is that the winch pulling pounds should be atleast 2 1/2 times the weight of the vehicle.

Main reason for this is, the winch has maximum pull rate on the first wrap of cable on the drum, it is less for each additional wrap. (read that in 4wheel&off-road mag).
So, if you only unspool a wrap or two, the pull rate is substantially less.

One of the reasons that I put a 12,000lb. winch on the front of mine, the other is that I wheel with a lot of full size machines and a smaller winch will over heat too soon if I have to try and winch them.

Now to answer your question about the winch in the pic, it is an older ramsey, and if it has all of its original parts on it, I would make a bet that its rated a bit more than 8,000.

I'm looking for a REP 6000 or a REP 8000 right now for my Jurassic Park project. There are a few on ebay for ~$500 and seem like good winches based upon my research.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to talk them up like they're indestructible cause everything wears out & fails eventually. I've seen broke Warns & Ramseys alike, but far fewer broke Ramsey winches vs broke Warn winches.

LOL
The story behind it is when I was 14 I was work for my now father-in-law farming we took that winch off his old farm truck he was trading in. I put in the shed and have never forgot about it. Well you know how when you are young and everything seems really big, but when you see it when you are older it's not nearly as big. Well I went to dig this out and it is still as big as I remember it.

That's a beefy old winch for sure. I'd take it in a heartbeat.
