Question Rattling? Engine Noise

I have a 1994 YJ with the 2.5L 4 cyl. engine. I exchanged it out for a "Tough One" rebilt and it sat until the warrenty ran out. It has about 5 hours of run time on it. It suddenly now makes a noise low in the motor, metalic sounding. It idles great, no smoke. I'm told main bearing. Any other ideas before I pull the engine? Thanks.

sounds like main to me. that sucks, bad rebuild. there's way too much of that happening now. rebuilds either fail quickly, or last a little while out of warranty. seems no rebuild is as good as original anymore.

why do you say that??? what could go wrong? you test the block, head, check for true in the crank, hone, slap in bearings and check tolerances and put it back together....what could go wrong..

hahahah, now that you're gonna rebuild a honda motor you wanna know why rebuilds go bad. thats what i see these days. i'm no engine builder, but anyone here could get hired rebuilding engines for the millions of rebuilders out there now. they suck, they save money everywhere they can, and they slap things together as quckly as possible

if you take your time, and don't skip any steps like i told you, you'll be fine.

If it works out to be a main bearing, am I wise to get a remanufactured crank and bearing set? I should've gone with the chevy 350 like I wanted.

ha, anything is better than replacing the 2.5 with another one. it all depends on if the bearing has spun and scored the crank. this is different, but i've gotten away with replacing bearings in the engine that were worn without machining the crank, but yours should be brand new, i'll bet they used the wrong bearings for how the crank was ground.

I'm dealing with the same problem. But instead of throwing any money away on it I'm just going to swap a straight 6 in and call it a day.

4.0 or 4.2 jeepster I got the 4.2 and love the torque and power compared to my friends '79 ford, I pulled his ass all over the place
