Rattling noise on 3rd/higher speeds

Hi,

My 2.5 1989 is making some weird rattling noises when I pop into 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. The noise is similar to the one you get when you don't put the tranny into reverse all the way and try to drive. The confusing part is that sometimes, when I go about 50 I put it into neutral to check if it goes away - sometimes it does sometimes it does not. Its perfect on 1st and 2nd.

Due to this I thought it was the exhaust, since I ripped it out on a rock a couple weeks ago and had to reattach it, but everything there looks solid, no issues wit the clamps, no leftover bolts or nuts rattling etc.

From what I read the AX5 has most major problems with the 5th gear, so hoping its not that bad.

Any ideas what I could check next?

sounds like a tranny problem, could be in the clutch. good time to upgrade to a AX-15.
