rear axle help

hey guys
I have a 88 yj 4.2L IL6 on 33". jeep kind of grinds and cracks when turning and sometimes just rolling in low gears. it also kind of acts like it slips/sputters and then jerks a little when turning/low gears. I was told its coming from my rear axle. I would like to replace it, stock D30. looking on craigslist but not a lot of options out here in Hawaii. What would be the easiest fix with little modifications and all other options really. Its a daily driver and don't take it on trails. been fixing it ever since ive got it and hoping this is the end at least for awhile.

The rear end is a Dana 35. First: Do you know if the rear end has a locker or limited slip installed?

If it's binding & grinding it's time for a rebuild or replacement. No easy way around it. Almost sounds like the pinion nut has backed off, but they usually won't run long after that happens.

It does sound like you have a locker. If you let off the gas when turning, does it do better?

Understandable about the 30/35 mix up. Not a problem. First thing you need to do is find out if your rear end has had a locker or limited slip installed. They can make some crazy noises in a turn.

Honestly the easiest way is to pull the diff cover, drain the oil & have a look. Since it's making a grinding noise, I would go ahead & do a visual inspection.

I have all your problems. I had the jerking problem and noticed that my u-joint was bad and causing the jerking. replaced it and it does not jerk anymore, but i still have the knocking noise. So i will be replacing my rear end sometime soon as well. good luck. i will be subscribing to see how it goes!

Like said, if it has a locker it will make a popping sound when turning.
