Talking rear diff locker help!

hey everyone,

im looking to get a locker and new gears in my yj. im running 33x12.5-15 bfg A/T's. I heard from someone that an aussie locker is the way to go when you have no money. but im also trying to figure out what gear ratio I should go with. any help?

what motor and transmission?

also aussie lockers aren't being produced right now, and im not sure when they will be again, there are others like it, spartan lockers are similar..

it has the 4.0 and the 5 speed. and I do plan on wheeling it often but i still want it to be streetable. I was also looking into lock-right lockers as well.

As far as gears go, I'd go 4.27 or if you plan on upping it to 35s later on then go ahead and do 4.56. As far as lockers go, I cast my vote for detroit based on my experience with it. Not exactly cheap, but really reliable.

No such ratio 4.27, either 4.10 or 4.56

actually they do make a 4.27 r&p for the d30/35

Interesting I've never seen a set while looking for gears for my yj or xj

I have a spartan in mine and it works great. If your gonna regear don't waste time I'd go 4.88 right away.

Thanks for all of the idea's I don't plan on going any bigger than 35's after I do a spring over axle and make tube fenders. So I will probably go with the 4.56's so i will have plenty of power to the ground.

If you want more power with those 35s then you'll want it up to 4.88. I'm running that myself, no complaints here. 4.56 is a slightly more fuel-friendly choice, but it wont be quite as peppy.

Hmm, that is true. But I drive it everyday 30 miles to work and 30 more coming back. I think I may stick with 4.56's. If i don't like the power I get with a 35/4.56 combo, I could always go back to 33 inch tires.

Interesting im running 4.56 with very heavy 37 12.50 R16.5 and have no issues with power. Doing 70mph on the freeway isnt an issue. That was before I built my 4.7L

You also don't have a 4banger
Neither does the OP but that's where my experience is coming from at least. Can't speak for big tires on the six, my 4.2L CJ has stock tires.

Haha I am sure that 4.56's would give me all of the power I would ever need. I've been pricing them out. As far as the locker goes, I'm still undecided:/ they are so expensive. I am tempted to weld it and call it a day. Lol

Dont weld a DD, it will hop, chrip every time you turn. It will also wear tires out very quickly.

Okay I understand now. I mean, im more in it for traction, if it hops and chirps that's no big deal, I can live with that, as long as i don't break the axles.

If you weld the diff on a d35 and daily drive it. It WILL break axels. The hpping and chirping is what will break it.

Frankly locking a d35 with 35's is pushing it anyway. IMHO i have 32's and am locked with the spartan. It worries me sometimes, an 8.8 is in my future for sure. Already gathering parts for the swap and regear.

If you don't have the money to do it right then don't do it at all. Lockers is not always the answer for more traction. Experience, proper tire pressure, correct tread pattern for the condition.

And if you dont have those basic skills mastered, a locker will get you into a situation where youre experience wont help you and bad things happen.

True and not. I have seen guys without lockers try to get thru things anyway. They back up and full throttle rev limit to get the wheel speed up. This can be super dangerous IMHO. I have gone thru things with my locker at a slow pace with little throttle that the guy/s in front of my had to floor it..back up ... floor it again and again. Sometimes finally they get thru it. I just motor thru the first time with little throttle effort, at most some feathering of the throttle.

There have been situations where I have had to goose it some even with a locker but....

There is nothing wrong with autolockers of the axel can take the abuse. There is also not really any issues with welding diffs either if it's an offroad only rig. I've driven many vehicles with full spool'd rearends and they can be a handfull on the road sometimes.

This. Don't weld your DD. Learn to drive it without the locker, then once you've got the money go ahead and drop it in.

Yea I can agree with that. I know the 35 isn't a strong rear end, so I may just build an 8.8 and practice with the 35 until I get the 8.8 built to how I want.

Talking about the pros and cons of the 35 always stirs up some contention. I've got mine locked with 4.88 and I've never had any problems. If you beat the hell out of it, or your main strategy over obstacles is "floor it" you'll probably break it though. Just be gentle and it'll be fine.

I think im gonna take it easy with the 35 and build an 8.8. I'm thinking a Spartan locker or lock right with 4.56 gears. Just for that extra precaution. Lol.

Do they make 4.56's for a Ford 8.8?

Now for the front axle, is the 30 strong enough and would I be able to use the factory carrier with 4.56's or would i need to change that out?

Could I use a carrier out of a 2.5l wrangler?
