rear drive shaft and pinion question.

I have a 94 yj. 184,000 miles on her. the rear drive shaft makes a noise when i shift. I checked it out today. If you shake it it is solid. However if I try and rotate it with it in neutral, the shaft will move about 1/2 inch either direction.

Any ideas? Please let me know.

Thanks,

Bob

I don't think it's the drive shaft. Of course at 184K it's high time you changed out those u-joints. Sounds to me like your diff has a lot of slop to it. Don't put that thing under any great stress until you get it fixed. You're probably gonna need a ring and pinion. a 1/2 of slop is quite a bit. Crack it open and see what kinda shape it's in. Sounds like it's a good time for an upgrade!

Good luck.

Thanks,
Maybe a 1/2 is a little over exagerated. It does have alot i think. How much do you guys think a new ring and pinion would cost and can I do it myself?

thanks,

Don't replace gears unless they have badly chipped or broken teeth.
It would be good to look at them, but I'd look for the noise somewhere else.
