Rear end pop/clunk

What seems to be coming from the rear axle when i take off from a stop while making a turn, and sometimes while taking off from a stop going up hill is a pop or series of small pops. Wondering if anyone may have a suggestion on what it is or what needs to be done to fix it? Thanks.

Got the same coming from my 93YJ . Got some play in rear wheels . Thinking axle shafts are moving in and out. UJ's aren't worn. Diff not noisy at higher speeds. Hope you get some good feedback as i need it too.

Check the fluid level in your rear diff. Also check your Pinion Yoke for wear and make sure the U-joint bolts are tight.

my rear end was making some noises too, yesterday i pulled the cover to drain the fluid and replace it and this is what i found

As long as the ring/pinion are good thats an easy fix.

aww damn!!!!! i have the same issue. almost feel as if im spinning tires and then it catches and i take off. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...now me and the mad scientist are going to have to take it apart and check the diff, thanks!!!

And here iw as thinking it had to much play.

Just drained the diff and inspected the teeth . (Put the rear axle on jacks so the wheels would spin.) Used spray brake cleaner to get the teeth nice and bright. The old oil was black, dirty and piss thin. Cleaned the two mating faces up and tightened the cover down on going to opposite bolts each time. ( On fresh gasket sealant.) Then I refilled the diff with 75/90 using a large surgical syringe. (fFriends in nursing.) Went out and did a few figure 8 turns to get the oil in everywhere. Guess what ? Popping, clunking noise gone. Also had a chat with a jeep rebuild guy near me and he reckons there is always a little play in the axle shafts. Moral of the story: Do the maintenance before you start buying new diff parts. Thanks for all the guidance on the forum.

^ i did the same thing, but i still have the pop here and there. Yours will come back too probably. The issue is not even broken teeth. It is that there is too much play in the carrier.

i got an 06 wrangler x and mine does the same thing when in 4hi and 4lo. is there a way to perminently get rid of it w/o breaking the bank?
