I wouldn't swap a d35 . If you are going to spend time and money on an axle swap go for an upgrade! You will be much happier with a Dana 44 or a ford 8.8 or 9".
i put a d44 out of an 89 cherokee and i had to relocate ther perches, the cherokee was spring over axle and the yj spring under. im n ot sure about the 96 it might even have coils? and disc brakes?

Unless you get another D35 from a YJ you're going to have to fab perches and shock mounts. Although the internals will work.
