Rear Main Seal

I have a slow oil leak in my '94 4.0 YJ and my dad and I think it might be the rear main seal. Has anyone ever done one before? Thanks!

Do a search on ths forum. Someone was just talking about that. I do remember them saying that you need to check the valve cover in the back by the firewall. Alot of times it is leaking there and just looks like a rear main seal.

Even if it is the rear main seal it isn't THAT hard to do. It's made up to be a much bigger deal than it really is.
Drop the pan, change the oil pump while your in there. Get a pair of vicegrips or needle nose pliers and shimmy the old seal out. the top half is the "pain" part. It slides around a half-circle groove. Once you wiggle it out the new one gets greased up and you have to wiggle it back into the same semi-circle groove without tearing it. If it tears it'll leak. Go nice and slow and you'll be A-OK

There's a pretty good YouTube video on replacing the rear main on the 4.0

Make sure you put the upper seal in facing the correct way. I learned that the hard way.

Does the OP have a 4.0L or a 2.5L? (Hint: fill out your Jeep profile)

The 4.0L is a 2 piece seal, and is fairly easy to access.

The 2.5L is a 1-piece seal, and requires transmission removal to replace.
