rear main seal, trans question

found a jeep and was test driving it today, it had an oil leak right between the engine and transmission and the seller thought it was the rear main seal,my buddy thought it was also, what do you guys think, also the 4x4 worked great but i felt alot of play it seemed in the trans shift between reverse, neutral, and drive, its a 6cyl auto.

possibly rear main seal, also check valve cover gasket, it likes to leak down the back side of motor and fool guys. oil filter adapter also likes to leak straight back, then down the back side of the block to look like a rear main also. as far as the trans, its hard to tell without driving it, but if it drives ok and just takes a little longer to go from drive revers or nuetral it might just be a normal jeep thing, it isn't like a car. check the trans fluid level, and color, thats about all you can do. good luck

Yep, sounds like a rear main seal. Check and see if you see any oil coming from the valve cover gaskets. Basically make sure it's not coming from farther up.

just remember it isn't a sports car. I don't know if you have driven older jeeps before but the tranny is a little looser than most car's
