Remove leaf springs to soften ride?

Hello,

Does anyone have any advice to soften the ride of my 93 YJ? It has a 4inch Rough Country lift and the ride is extremely stiff. This was fine for awhile but my back is about to give out. I was told that I could remove a couple of the leafs from my springs to soften the ride and give me more wheel travel. Does anyone know how this is done, or how many/which ones I should remove?

how stiff are we talking? how tight are the bolts at the shackle and frame side? its no caddilac but my jeep doesn't ride bad enough to mess up my back...and i have a few back issues myself...and yes i have the 4" rc setup

idk about removing leaf springs, you run into issues of lower ride height...

Pretty darn stiff. If I stand on the bumber and jump up and down I can get about an inch of travel. It is fine on pavement, but any bump or pothole rocks the cab. I am not sure about the tension at the shackels. How tight should they be?

Your springs need to be worn in, just like every other set of leaf springs.

Offroad it.

If you remove a leaf you can be doing more damage (per say) than good. When you offroad it you're flexing your leafs which will wear them in and make them softer. Also, running an appropriate tire PSI can help tremendously.

Thanks, I did not know that about springs. I will certainly check my tire pressure and get out on some trails. I really don't want to compromise the integrity of the set up if I don't have to.

That sounds like my old RC lift, I'd check the bolt torque at the shackles I know mine was well over torqued and it very little give. When I put my new lift in I torqued the bolts to about 30ft/lbs at the shackles and 100ft/lbs at The frame. I got those numbers off a forum so don't take them as 100% accurate.

The limiting factor in how much the springs will flex are the shocks...In addition chuck the track-bars if you are still running those. for the springs to break in, will take several good flexing trips off road.
