Removing the rear view mirror from the windshield?

I need to replace the rear view mirror. I bought a new one but the new mirror will not fit over the old metal button that is glued to the windshield. the question is how do I remove the little metal button from the glass with breaking it? I don't think prying it off with a screwdriver will be a good plan......

Use a heat gun if you have one available. You can pick one up from Harbor Freight for around $10 for a cheap one which will be all you need for a job like this. A blow dryer will work too probably, but will take longer. Apply the heat, work it back and forth until you get some movement and use a razor scraper to dig into a bit. Too much force and you risk breaking the glass.

Or, you could just move the mirror location...... Then you don't have to worry about breaking anything....
