Removing the steering wheel...

I have pull the steering wheel already. I am wondering do I have to disconnect the steering shaft via the u-joint from the part that goes through the tub and connects to the steering wheel?

Is there a way that I do not have to disconnect the ujoint?

I just went to the stealership and said I would have to buy an all new steering shaft for $250 and that they dont offer just the steering shaft ujoint. Does anyone know if/where I can find just the u-joint?

Thanks for the help.

I take it you have a 94 YJ H.O? Your post isn't very specific about your problem. Do you need to replace the steering column or the joint in front of the firewall?

I got a complete steering column from Davey at http://daveysjeeps.com/ for a stupid cheap price. Call him first before you go to the stealership.

I was just going to take the upper u-joint off of the steering column and that way the steering assembly would be free from the tub when I lift it. But no parts store or the stealership sell the ujoints individually and said I would have to buy the whole shaft. Do i have to disconnect from the steeering shaft or is there an easier way?

disconnect it from the steering box. My stock steering shaft has an easy 13mm bolt to let the shaft loose from the box.

Have you even crawled under there to look at it? There has to be a simple way to get it free without spending money.

dont have to crawl . I have the hood and fenders off. I took a quick glance down at the steering box but got skurred when i seen all the pipes and hoses and bolts. Im a relative newbie to all this and dont want to break anything too expensive quite yet.
