Replacing the input shaft on a np231?

From what my book shows it looks like it is only a retainer, bearing and a a few snap rings to remove the 21 spline from my 231 transfer case. I am going to need to put the 23 spline to put the AX-15 in. Is the involve tearing the case apart or is this able to be done from the front? and is installing it just as easy??
Call me cheap or half broke at the moment but I just cant afford to replace my T-case also... There is a local jeep guy that I am sure has some 231 cases that I can get the 23 spline shaft from for cheap.
Thanks
~Rich

yes u do

i just went through my t-case..you will have to split the case..it would be a good idea to replace the front seal and bearing and also the main shaft bearing (into) the new 23 spline input ~fly

I didn't read that writeup, but changing out that shaft is very simple. The 231 is such an easy case to work on. Just be careful tightening the case bolts again. It's aluminum and will crack.
