Replacing the windshield

Skeeter's '91 YJ has a cracked windshield. We are replacing it today.Once we started removing the old glass, we found there is not one gasket around the glass but two. One on the outside that holds the glass and one on the inside that I don't know what it does. The one holding the glass was glued to the frame with some kind of black stuff that is a real pain to get off. It's really tough and rubbery. Skeeter says it's silicone sealant.

Are the two seals supposed to be attached or did we rip them apart?
Anybody done this before? Got tips?
Is it normal to have the two seals?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

It was probably all one seal, an outer lip, then the glass and an innerlip that fit into the windshield frame. I'm not 100% positive on that though.

Thanks for responding BK! After posting, I lost the thread.

We've figured out that it's supposed to be two pieces, with windshield sealant between them. Skeeter found a site that talked about it. We've got the gasket around the glass and it's in place, we just need to go get the sealant to glue it all in.

I've been taking pictures so, once it's done, I'll be able to post pics to show y'all.

Oh it's not squared away yet, it's just kinda in there
It took a couple tries to figure out how the gasket went on the windshield and then it took Amy to figure out how to put it on right.
Hopefully it'll be done today if we can find enough sealant to fill the gap.

Hardware store should have what you need in a large tube. A windshield place might also be able to help with the sealer. When I was working in Auburn Wash. Thats where I got the sealer for my Ranger windshield.

Good luck that stuff is nasty and will stay on your hands for a week

Thanks, Odhinn.
I think I'll add rubber gloves to my list of things we need.
This has become a good learning project,as well as making Skeeter's jeep a whole lot safer and purtier.

Next, he needs a paint job and tube fenders.

When you are done you can come and do mine...It's just a short drive to PA. Actually when I had mine done the last time I helped the glass guy do it and we didn't even use the inner seal. He said it was just cosmetic, it didn't really serve a functional purpose. As far as the sealant you need, I wouldn't go to a hardware store I'd go to an auto parts store. They sell that stuff in a tube just like the household silicone, but it is much stronger. You will probably need a couple of tubes to be safe.

It's in, both seals are in, lots of slimy goop was used, lots of rubber gloves were used, wow, it was almost like some of the parties I used to go to

Now I just have to wait a couple days for it to dry and see if it holds but it already looks 100% better.
