Reverse Gear Popped and now leaking Transmission Fluid

Put my 88 YJ into reverse this morning and it felt like the whole transmission fell out of her. I tried one more time to put it in reverse with no luck... nothing seemed to be catching. Basically reverse is gone.

It will shift into first, second and engage just fine.
When I release the clutch lots of chatter going on at idle.
I just had a new clutch installed less than 200 miles ago.

1. So... is my transmission shot or just the reverse gear?
2. Would the new clutch cause the tranny to fail so soon if not installed correctly?
3. Why the heck is so much fluid leaking out... is it possible to throw something off the transmission so hard it cracks the bell housing?

Thanks for any insights and help

1. reverse and 5th are on the same assembly(rear of the trans) they share the same shift rail and fork. so see if you can shift into 5th.
2.a new clutch wouldn't cause this unless it had something to do with re-assembly.
3.i haven't seen reverse blow a hole into the case. so you need to look and see where the fluid is coming from. and remember reverse is near where the t-case bolts up, not the bell housing.
4. dont drive and dont crank the engine, the more you use it the more it will cost to fix.

if i had to guess the issue with 5th is inside, but shouldn't cause a leak, so need to find the leak area

Ok. Thanks. Can 5th and reverse be rebuilt without having to rebuild the whole transmission?
I've got it at the mechanics now and I'm waiting to hear the damage it's going to cause my wallet. What sort of diagnostics should I be anticipating to hear from the transmission guy?
And cost... Ballpark?

if you have a hole in the case they will have to tear the whole thing down anyway, and if you get the whole unit rebuilt it shouldnt cost but a few hundred more and you get a warranty...

If he has a hole in the case, they wont bother tearing it down, they will just price him a replacement.

You cant fix a hole in the case....

yea... most shops that build manuals have cores, and most cores are missing parts thats why they will tear his down and use a case from stock and re-assemble... now he might get a quote for a unit that is already built and his will be a core... depends on the shop and if they have someone that can build....

Update.
So no picture of the hole... sorry. But the gears did put a small hole in the case. They ended up re-building the whole thing. Cost me $1200 roughly. Got a year and or 12000k warranty and a bunch of torn up gear parts... yippie.
