i thought if that was bad the truck would be able to start in different gears besides Park and neutral witch it cant. Actually know that i think about it, my starting with a key stopped working a while back and i didnt feel like dealing with it so i put the starter on a toggle switch.

But all my other lights work correctly and arent they all connected to the same thing. How might i check if my neutral safety switch is bad and where does the power come from to feed the reverse lights

If its auto then it would most likely be the neutral safety switch as said before. Power goes into the neutral safety switch then gets diverted based on where the manual lever is. If its put into reverse one signal goes to the pcm and the other goes to the reverse lights.

Sorry I was thinking of an aw4. You don't need a pcm with that unit. Your neutral safety switch is the little 3 prong sensor on the driverside. It costs about $20 so I would just give that a shot. Might even fix you key starting issue. If you are try that and it doesn't fix it PM me and I can get you wiring schematics and pin out info.

Do you have a 3 speed or a 4 speed? I can send pics depending on which one you have.

That switch looks just like this. If you look right above the transmission pan near the driverside rear it will have three wires going into a black rubber cover. It should be just a little higher than your driveshaft. Let me know if this helps.

You can get a multimeter and check for continuity between terminal 1 and 3 when button is released. No continuity when the button is pressed. 1 and 3 is you circuit for the reverse lights. Terminal 2 should have continuity with the metal prong on the tip. Also pull the connector and check for power on 2 of the three wires. The one with power should be checked for resistance.

According to the wiring schematic it gets the power from the turn/bu fuse.

It wont drain much. But basically it does kinda look like a drain plug with 3 prongs sticking out. Let me know what you find.

i just checked it out and ya i have one of those. only difference is my switch faces the back left of the truck i believe that the switch is ok i probably just cut a one of those wires while i was removing the wires under the battery. I removed 90% of the wires from the truck as well as the ECM and the computer and all those things. so tommorow when its light out i will c what i can do, i might just say screw it and put it on a toggle switch and then put 2 6 inch KC lights on the roof rack

Your switch does face toward the back left. Its almost like a 45. It is about 4 inches or so behind your manual lever ( the rod that is connected to your shifter cable that goes into the trans.)

As for a relay, there isn't one... the power is supplied from the turn signal fuse runs through the switch then to the reverse lights. No relay is shown in any of the wiring schematics for any A904/A909. The manufacturer part number for an 89 wrangler neutral safety switch is 3747361. Give any parts store this number and they can cross reference it to their part.

ya i want to advanced auto parts and they didnt have them. Im going to try pep boys and a few other places. I bypassed the neutral safety switch with a wire and the referse lights immediatly turned on. I would leave the wire but im not sure how to bypass the neutral safety without using another switch

If you left the wire on your back up lights would stay on all the time. As for the safety switch part you can jump that one straight to ground... then you could start it in any gear.
