reverse problem

I have an an 87 yj with the 4.2 and a 5sp trans with the 231 trans case. I was out playin the other day and hung up a little bit and since then every time I put it in reverse it feels like it shifts into reverse but as soon as I let out the clutch it will pop right back out. If I hold the shifter hard into reverse and am super easy on the clutch I can make it move, very little though. Most of the time it just pops out and will grind badly if I try to force it.
Anyone have any ideas?
Also I have a bad back that the doc wants me to go for surgery but that aint gonna happen till I can walk..... but anyway the question is what auto trans would be an easy swap? I mean easy like the only thing needed would be a floor shifter., no transfer case isues....I know I'd need a flexplate but other than the normal stuff.
Thanks for any help.
~Rich

An auto out of another Jeep would be the easiest. most of the cherokees had auto trannys back then. If you go too new with the tranny then you will have electrical things to worry about. I am not sure what years would be a direct swap.

unfortunately that happened to me when i had my 87 and the trans was totally shot. My reverse gear was shredded. I just put a AW4 from an XJ in my current YJ but i did it with a complete motor swap too. Im not sure if it will mate with you 4.2L

I did have to do new front and rear driveshafts, but again I went from a 2.5L to a 4.0L with auto so it was gonna have to happen regardless.

Well I did some pokin around and have learned:
YJ Wrangler - Jeepiki - Jeep Wiki
From 1987-1989, the standard manual transmission was the light-duty Peugeot BA10/5 5-speed. Beginning in 1990 and through the end of the YJ production run, 4-cylinder models received an Aisin AX-5 5-speed while 6-cylinder models received the stronger Aisin AX-15 5-speed. In 1994, the slave cylinder on manual transmissions was moved outside of the transmission's bellhousing to allow for easier replacement.

For all years, the only automatic transmission offered was the AMC/Chrysler TorqueFlite 904 3-speed transmission. Prior to 1994, 4-cylinder models were manual-only.
So can someone fill me in on what my options are? If I have to keep the manual trans I will. But I know how my back is....the auto will be better over all for me. I know alot of people own these years and have broken these transmissions. Someone please give me some info.
Thanks,
~Rich

I have also come to find out, unless anyone has another option for the auto idea.....All of the Torque Flite transmissions all have a 23 spline output shaft anyway. So I guess I will have to get the part for my T-case and do an AX-15. What autos will fit with the same length? 727 is the strong one. Will it bolt up with out problems?

I don't know if the auto out of a 87-97 XJ would work because they have the 4.0L, and not the 4.2L. I'm unaware if the bolt patterns are different though.

I am sure the bolt pattern is the same. I wonder if the length is the same though. I am sure that the 21spline 231 T-case is gonna be the issue. I also need to find out what years became electric controlled.

WHEN i CHECKED INTO TURNING MY 5 SPEED INTO AN AUTO, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD COST WAY MORE THAN THE VALUE OF MY VEHICLE AND BE IFFY AT BEST EVEN AFTER SPENDING THE MONEY. SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF JUST REPLACING THE WHOLE VEHICLE.

If you are going with the AX-15, don't forget it has a 23 spline output shaft so you will have to change the NP231 to match.

Yes I am lookin into that and put a post to find out how to swap the shafts. Book makes it sound fairly simple but I have yet to get any info from someone who has done it.
