ring and pinion.

Looking to put 4.11 gears in d30/35. Rough countrys site says I need new open carriers for both axels. I have 4.0 5 speed and I think it still has the stock 3.07s. What are these, do I need them and why?

Honestly if you want to keep the d30/d35 then just find a junkyard matching set of axles with 4.10 gears, swap both housings out and sell your stock ones. The amount of money you'd put into new/used carriers, new r/p, and new bearings and setup would be more than a set of used axels.

The reason for new carrriers i assume is beacuse yours won't support the 4.10 ring gear which sounds odd but could be true. The carrier is the unit that hold the ring gear and connects the axles to the pinion thru the ring gear. It is also where the spider gears(or locker ) set for differential action.

Yes junk yard is your best bet the 2.5L came with 4.10 stock also try CL. The reason for new carriers is that the ring gear wont fit. The carrier installed on the 3.07 gears only support gear set up too 3.54. BTW what size tire you running? Have you looked at different caluators to see if 4.10 is the best choice?

most 3.07s' came with the auto and the 6cly. Not sayng the 5spd couldn't have it, but 3.54 or 3.73 is more in line with the 4.0L. Also you might want to consider a rear ford 8.8 (95 to about 2000 works well) which many came with 4.11 gears. It s great upgrade if you want to run bigger tires. Granted you have to do some welding, but well worth it.

Thanks for advise, I just put new 31s on and don't think I will be going any bigger on tires. I had always heard stock 4.0 had 3.07, but will look into it. If it has 3.56 or 3.73, then 4.11 will work just fine.

If I do swap for an 8.8 rear, can I keep the d30 up front or should I swap that as well?
