so i recently purchased an 87 wrangler with the I6. Figured it would be good because its carbureted and something more mechanical i could work on. As of late though i've been having some rough starts and it idles high when i first get it started and then finally settle down a bit. does anyone know what this could be???? thanks
The high idle is an automatic choke it's perfectly normal. Let it run a few minutes at the high idle then tap the gas it will go down. I would definitely give her a tune up see where that gets ya. Try a new air filter if dirty, plugs, wires, seafoam treatment and have someone check your timing.
x2, +if you smell a lot of gas, chances are it is not all getting burned. New spark plugs (make sure they are gapped right) new cap and rotor to start. Should be a cheap fix on the plugs/cap/rotor. Then, if it still has the issue change your wires and have your timing checked (after installing new wires/cap/rotor & plugs). If they mess with the timing without changing all that stuff first, you'll be waisting time by adjusting it to compinsate for other problems.
On a side note, I did see the same symptoms once when a catalitic convertor was clogged up. But, it would sound very restricted when trying to pass another car, amost like blowing air through a small straw...
I should say to, if you've never changed a cap and rotor, the easiest way to do it without fudging up your wires is to pull the old cap with the wires still on it, set it over to the side, swap the rotor out, put the new cap on then move each wire one at a time onto the matching spot of the new cap.
well i do need to replace the front pipe and catalytic converter i know that much... heat shield fell off the converter and there is a leak in the front pipe that makes it sound real loud. i wanna do the plugs, cap, wires and such as soon as i get home from college and start working again... gotta remember most of my money is going towards beer these days
if you have not done the nutter bypass to your jeep yet that will be the first thing to do.
it will make it start easy run smoother and stronger and rev out faster .
a major improvement all around.
here is a link on how to do it.
and it is a free fix. This is a Picture Guide to Nutter Bypass - JeepForum.com
sounds real easy just have never done any timing stuff
if i did all the wiring could i then take it to a shop and have them do the timing
or wouldn't they do that?
no you need to do the timing right then .
just get a timing light ( AUTO PARTS STORE WILL LEND YOU ONE ) and do the wiring and then call me and i will walk ya thru setting the timing over the phone.
i will be glad to help ya out.
that is what being part of the jeep family is about.
do i essentially need a timing light?
i noticed on the one right up that there are notches
and i should move mine to the 6th one up (8 degrees)
does this mean i still need the timing light?
not sure about messin' w/timing but if you want to do it, yeah use a light to be sure your dead on where you want to be.
But, start with the consumables. Spark plugs are made to fail, same with cap & rotor... Not once have I ever replaced a cap, rotor, plugs and wires without a noticable difference in smoothness and performance. When those parts are new and you have a good clean fuel system you should be able to just about balance a dime on the engine.
I have an 04 Wrangler X. Sometimes when I start it, it runs rough, as if it was dry. So I turn it off in a hurry and restart it and it's fine. I get code p0456.
