Seeking Tranny Advice Semi-Desperately

(Hola extended family. Have not checked in since early summer due to the fact some jobs fell thru, was briefly unemployed, worked construction til I had a steady job and now I'm fine. Welcome to 2010....)

For the last three weeks I've been locked out of 3rd gear.
I commute day to day and wind 2nd gear out hard and shift into 4th. A hell of a way to go....
This is 75% of the time. Horrible grinding and pops back out. Will not engage.

25% of the time 3rd gear mysteriously comes back and all is well.

My two barely dependable local mechanics (I live in the sticks) say they won't touch it in a million years.

They say I need a new trans. Maybe 3rd gear synchro, maybe shift fork, maybe???

Buy a new AX5 they say, $1500 and they'll do the install.

Called a tranny shop to ask why general mechanics won't screw with trannies. Tranny shop told me they didn't know. Any replacement of syncho etc would be $1500.

Screwed coming or going.

I've burned out clutches in the past and am convinced it's not the clutch. The characteristic loss of power just isn't there. She still flys.

Just pissed I can't go offroad anymore. A new AX5 is 6 weeks (three paychecks) away.

Sorry it was so long, trying to give you every detail.

Do I need a new tranny or is something else going on?

Any and all replies very appreciated--Brent

Newbe Ron Baby here.

The last time I worked on a transmission that skipped a gear the synchro was broken. It was pretty spendy. The main problem I found working with gears is the alignment. New gears and old gears do not seem to mesh very well. that tends to make re-builders weary of certain jobs.

If you're like me, you're broke all the time. You might check around and see if you can find a backyard mechanic willing to tackle the thing.

Good luck,

Ron

I just did a quick search on e-bay for a master rebuild kit for the AX5. Not too pricey. If you have the tools and work space it may be worth it to try the rebuild yourself rather than save up the 1500. Good luck.

To the first two posters: sound advice thanks.

GaryK: Nothing but Cheros in every junkyard around me but that's a start. I read somewhere Chero's had been using the AX5 since the 80's but I have to research this.
