Sending Unit on 88 Wrangler with 4.2L

Hey everyone - I've seen a lot of similar threads but not this exact one so I am hoping someone can help?

I took out the factory instrument cluster on my 88' 4.2L since they weren't working right. Hooked up the new autometer fuel gauge (it is the correct one for the Jeep) and the gauge barely moved up.

1) Is the ground on the gauge supposed to go directly to the fuel sending unit? Now, it's grounded to the same place as the bulb lights and new clock. I am planning on running the 18 gauge, two conductor wire back to the sending unit, then hooking into the brown wire that powered the factory gauge. Am I on the right track?

2) Does anyone have a write up on replacing the fuel sending unit, or any advise? Does the tank need to be completely removed? Where's the best place to get one -- and is there anything else that should be replaced while doing the procedure? Thanks!

Ok here you go... Go to they sell fuel sending units for our jeeps... If you have the stock tank there were some that have a inspection or maintance panel which you could use to replace the unit, if not then yea take the tank out... Suggestion would b run her low like a gallon or less then take your plate off then the tank is just 2 bolts away! I would say quadratec is the cheapest I but I only went to 3 websites.. Hope this helps!

As it turns out, QT might have accidentally sent me the wrong gauge for my Jeep, so they have arranged to send me another one. Looks like the gauge was reading backwards. I'll hook up the new gauge and let you know what pans out.

Yup - I had the wrong gauge! I needed the one that's reads 0 and 90 ohms (for empty and full) and once I hooked up the correct gauge, it worked. Lesson learned - make sure you check the numbers/specs of the gauge on the back of the box before you hook it up! Thanks Quadratech for taking the old one back and paying all of the shipping
