Shackle lift

I want to install a 1 1/4" shackle lift. From what I can see It looks like I will have to drop the gas tank to remove the rear, top shackle bolts. Am I mistaken? Is there an alternative???

If your new shackles came with new bolts, just cut the heads off the old ones. Install the new ones with the bolt from the outside.

Some have said that they were able to 'wiggle' the bolt out. I could not on mine so I just used a sawzall and cut the bolt off - actually, that is easier than dropping the gas tank. Go to your hardware store and get a new bolt to replace it. The bushing can remain inside the frame if you are not replacing them - just be careful not to damage when cutting the bolt.
I removed the nut and pushed the bolt out a bit to get a good clear cut on the head.

I would add a leaf from a Tahoe. that will give you 2" lift if you just go get the 2 long leaves from a chev Tahoe. use the longest one in the rear and the next long one in the front. they give your entire spring pack a bit of arch and support the entire spring. shackles suck.

To the original poster - this is called a "b*stard pack". Generally speaking, most people recommend buying complete sets of leaf springs from companies like OME, BDS, or Zone. Some people do make up their own leaf spring packs, but I'd recommend that you look around the forum and research on lift springs, lift kits, b*stard packs, etc.

For your original question, cutting the bolt to remove the shackle is perfectly acceptable, and what I would do. It's much easier than dropping the tank.

I like adding the one long Tahoe leaf because it is almost as long as the jeep main leaf. it lifts 2" and supports the main leaf so it wont bend on the ends like some do.
