she's a super squeeek, super squeek

hey guys once again a small yet annoying problem.

a few weeks ago i did a full tune up on my 95 YJ 2.5 manual. after about 6 trips to idiot zone i finally was able to find the right size serpentine belt. (which lead me to find out i have power steering that was just empty due to a small leak.

Now the serpentine belt USUALLY only squeeks for a few seconds after a cold start. But every once in a while it starts to be an ass, it will squeek when i take off in 1st, or sometimes just keep on going down the road which makes everyone stare. One night it kept on squeeking and my gauges (temp and oil pressure) went thru the roof, i refilled the coolant, but still hotm i turned the wheel all the way to the left hten the right, went forward a bit, and the squeeking stopped.

Any ideas on what may be going on with this ordeal or is it something i gotta live with?

Why your oil pressure went up I have no clue. If your water temp went up then your belt was likely not turning the water pump effectively. Therefore your belt must be loose causing the noise. Be sure the belt is tracking over each pully properly. If the belt is on wrong then it could be turning the water pump backwards ( I doubt it) The schematic for the belt is on a sticker on the radiator fan cowling. The problem is likely as simple as a loose belt. The adjuster should be under the power steering pump. The belt should only deflect 1/4 inch. Tighten it up and that should fix it. Good luck.

Have you tried letting the engine warm up a bit before going?

I find that when I start my 4.2L, it squeeks rather LOUDLY but once I let it sit for 2-3 minutes it wont squeek anymore.

ok enough of that, as far as the belt being too loose, not a chance, im actually worried about it being too tight, i had to move the alternator to install it and the tensioner is barely touching it. running tight could maybe be the problem??

my 4.0 squeeked like a banshee. on the 4.0 the tension is controlled bt adjusting the power steering pump. about 4 turna on the 1/2" tensioner bolt and viola, no more squeek. the bolt is under the pump and kind of tough to get at. have a look see on that side.

I know mine squalled like a Banshee for the longest time. The belt was fine and had plenty of life on it. When it got wet it would stop, but as soon as it dried it would go back to the same shit. I changed it out with a better belt and it stopped.

sounds like it needs adjusting to me, too tight could make it squeak, but that would have to be super tight, like the engine would be effected. i will only buy gates belts. goodyear gatorback totally suck, as do dayco. if you have either of those, take it back.

you said your power steering was leaking, did you refill it? is the pump seal leaking onto the belt? make sure nothing is leaking onto the belt, water pump leaking coolant, power steering pump and so on.

Sounds like your belt is too tight to me. Better to fix it now before it ruins your alt or water pump.

I have the same sqrealing problem and have searched high and low for anything that slightly resembles an adjustment. I can't find a bracket with a slot or the tension adjustment bolt that the manual shows. There doesn't even appear to be a pivot point for an adjustment.

I had the same problem. If you look at the alternator, there is a small slot big enough for a large screwdriver for prying.

I had to replace the belt and followed the manual, didn't make sense. Found the alt slot, loosened the bolts and retightened with tension on the alternator and no more probs.

The alternator and P/S pump are two separate belts. Each belt tracks in different pulleys on the water pump and harmonic balancer , so I can't see where adjusting the alternator would do anything to the Power steering pump.
I'm not trying to be argumentative, just trying to resolve this thing.

I think my 95 YJ is too tight... I like tight, but can it be too tight? Would the belt being too tight cause it to squeak? Boooom runs great, just annoying...

I went through 3 different belts and numerous back and forth adjustments on my 91 trying to stop the squeak without any luck. Purchased the Gator Back belt (Amazon) and have not had a squeak since..... The belt is advertised as an Anti-Squeak belt, which proved true for me. Good luck.

The tension gauge IRQ linked is the way to go.

Serpentine belts need to be tighter than v-belts so they tend to be under tightened most often, but the screw tensioners can over tighten. A quick field test is to twist the belt with your fingers. It should not be able to be twisted 90 degrees. If you are properly tensioned, and it still squeaks, it either dirty/oily, or glazed. Dirt and dust can stick to the flat side and produce a shiny brownish glaze. The best thing to do is remove the belt and scrub clean all the pulleys followed with a wipe down with an alcohol soaked rag for complete removal of all contamination and then install a new belt.

Gator backs belts can be an upgrade and come stock on some vehicles but some users do report new squeaks with installing gatorbacks that disappear when they install a flat back.

Ive noticed that many OEMs use a serpentine belt that have a micro raised cross-hatch surface now

Are you sure it's not one of the idler pulleys going bad? Try a little lube on the pulley bearing and see if it goes away. This won't fix it but will identify if that's the problem.

To the guy with the 4.2 the power steering pump has the adjustment slot on the back of pump. You won't see it till you loosen the bolts.

so it is not as easy at just loosening the adjustment slider bolt, then tighten belt tensioner, then tighten adjustment slider bolt back? you need to loosen the two bolts on back of power steering pump too?

I was talking about the power steering belt on a 4.2 as far as the wd -40 i wouldn't make a habit out of spraying it on belts. It dry's them out. I little squirt to diag is fine. Anything with v- belts when you find the length get a wider belt. They grip pulley's better than a skinny belt below the top edge of the pulley's. They are classified like 2L, 3L , 4L the bigger the number the wider the belt. In the end a properly tensioned v belt will sit flush with the top edge of the pulley's. A proper setup is tight enough not to squeel but not so tight that you're causing premature bearing failure on your accessories.

Money...you are confusing SKI. The v-belt guy was from seven years ago. SKI has a serpentine belt.

SKI1974...your belt and pulleys are now contaminated with WD40 and grit and grime that was attracted by it. Too tight, or too loose are not an issue now. You need to read and follow my directions to completely clean ALL your pulleys and get a new belt.

There are a few bolts on the power steering pump you need to loosen on the front and back. They all have slots that allow the pump to swing. Once you loosen them ALL, the pump will move easily with the adjustment screw.
