As i recall there is a nut on the bottom, and you have to turn that first before you unscrew the knob, also the knob use some type of oil because i'm sure it's a little bit rusty from moisture.

If I remember right the notched metal piece at the bottom is a lock nut. You have to screw it down away from the knob first (clockwise) then unscrew the knob (counterclockwise)

That's my problem right now, I can't get either to budge. It doesn't look like it has room to screw down. My 4wd knob has some space underneath the lock nut but not my gear shifter.

Use the silicone / grease WD40, Try as hard as you can to turn it towards the driver side. Use rubber gloves to have better grip. and try try try as hard as possible.

Originally, someone probably screwed it all the way down not knowing what they were doing and tightened it until it lined up.

When in doubt - C4. That was a mythbusters joke. Have you checked the base for tiny headless Allen screws? Sometimes they'll replace oem with jeep logo ones that are aftermarket, cinched down on a plastic adapter and 1-3 Allen screws around the base

Oops, just opened a similar thread. I've been trying to remove mine all afternon also with no luck. I did manage to break loose the botton lock nuts with a crecent wrench and turned them all the way to the bottom. I also managed to break loose the knobs with Channelocks. Now the knobs just turn but won't unscrew out.

That's it!

I recently replaced both my 4wd shift knob & gear shift knob with "Rock Knobs" from Quadratec. Not easy to break loose on my '95.

I tried to get mine off this past weekend and broke the shaft just below the threads. Any ideas for that?

Weld a peice of all thread to the shaft or a bolt with the head removed. I have done this in the past with good results. Hardest part is keeping everthing straight.

After about an hour of straining, half a can of wd40, and a dozen curse words, haha i finally found a set of pliers i had that would grip the knob without sliding and it popped right off. That to be the most difficult, simple job I've had so far on my YJ. Good luck to you guys that are still doing it.

if that part of the shaft is still round, and narrow enough, you could use a thread cutting die of the correct size for the Shift handle. Your Shifter will be a bit shorter but still usable.
