Shifting Issues

My 98 Wrangler seems to shift into 1st and 2nd very hard at certain times. Then the next time I drive all the gears seem to shift just fine. And when I say hard I mean I end up punching the dash to get the Jeep shifted into 1st. Any Ideas??? This is my first Jeep. Thanks

This is the YJ forum but it's ok. Check fluid in the master cylinder. Thatd be first thing I'd check. Then second would to be bleed clutch. Third would to be drain fluid out of the transmission and put in the synchromesh made by pennsoil. The synchromesh helps smoother shiifting but might not fix. You might need new clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder. Check under dash at top of clutch pedal you should see master cylinder. If you see fluid on firewall than the master cylinder will need replacing
