Question Shifting Problem

94 WRANGLER JUST REPLACED CLUTCH AFTER 150'000 MILE WITH A CENTERFORCE. NOW I HEVE TO FORCE IT INTO 1ST GEAR NOT ALL THE TME IT JUST HAPPENS ONCE I AWHILE Thinking maybe the ball on the end of shifter is worn.And does the shifter come apart so you dont have to cut the boot.

what engine and tranny do you have, and either way yeah all that stuff comes aprt, unscrew your shifter knobs then remove the boot 4 screws hold the shift tower on just back them out and remove it. a little work but fairly simple and straight forward. i don't know why it would be so hard to go into first???keep us posted on that!

any advances? mine does the same thing, but like you said, sometimes. it's funny, i recently noticed that it's only bad when im starting off (duhh, thats only when you're shifting to 1st right?), but if im on a hill or something, and just steadily apply pressureto 1st while rolling down, it will like pop into gear. but when im just like at a light, sometimes i have to push on it hard enough that i think im going to actually snap the shift rod. any advice?

This sounds like it might be a common problem, because I'm having the same problem. Any advice would help a lot!

my sister's jeep is very similar, however it does it while trying to go into second sometimes, but not first. But if you double clutch it doesn't ever have a problem going into gear. Syncro's(sp?) maybe?

My 92 does that sometimes but i found that i was just a little low on clutch fluid. i have a slight leak so that is my problem

i had that same problem but i had a clutch fluid leak on the firewall in the cab
check for it by the clutch. but i just put the dot 3 break fluid in my clutch reservoir and i stopped having the problem but the stuff you guys are saying is the same exact thing that happened to me

yea my 92 also has this problem after i filled the clutch fluid. it will shift fine from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd but when going from 3rd to 2nd it grinds like crazy. its the syncros thats the only thing i can think of im way to lazy and poor to fix this i just try to avoid down shifting from 3rd to 2nd

hmmm.. my reservoir on the firewall has fluid in it, and I topped it off, but seem to be still having the problem... gotta be the syncro... oh well, i'm not gonna waist my money on a small inconvenience... haha

you have to pump the clutch and just drive it for a lil bit mine did it to after i filled it up and
then it stopped. also if it wont go into first very easy hold in the clutch and down shift into a low gear 4 or 5 this will line up the syncros and allow you to shift into first. i dont think this is a problem with the syncro because i know alot of jeeps that do this all the time its a normal thing. also you you are on a hill just push in to first and let the clutch out a bit and it will grab. not a problem really

At the stop light thats when you should shift into 4th or 5th gear then shift it into 1st

my 94 wouldnt shift into reverse or first. i ended up replacing the slave cylinder because the bleeder is on top of the damn thing and of course it stripped while trying to bleed it. replaced that and then bled the system. shifted clean for a few hours then i let it sit and it was the same thing all over. now i just pump the pedal for a good 45 seconds when i start it before i try to shift. i replaced the cap on the master cyl too. idk who decided to make the whole entire hydraulic system plastic but its gotta be cracked somewhere... right? any ideas with a quick/ cheap fix? i dont wanna overheat my clutch slamming it into gear when its acting up.

Do any of you have clutch fluid running down the inside of your jeep? Mine had me stumped awhile back because my fluid was full but the clutch wouldn't work right. I actually had air getting into the line which was causing all my problems.

everythinglooks dry. i get lazy sometimes and just buy parts that i think are causing the problem instead of actually diagnosing the problem. but its like 90 bucks for a master cylinder. i think it actually may need to be bled again after replacing the cap on the master. my jeeps the same blue color as yours crafty. just joined yesterday but im workin on pics for you guys.

My 93 4.0L does the same thing. finally I checked my clutch master cylinder fluid and it was gone or very low. filled it and after a short drive all was fine shifting. I must have a slow leak.

my jeep has done the same for over a year. It might have to do with high milage and the syncho's in the trans. cause my jeeps body and trans has 200,000 on it and i replaced the clutch, master and slave.

Synchros usually start showing issues in 3rd gear. Or atleast in my situations it has.

yea now that ive taken a closer look, it is leaking down the firewall. theres no doubt theres air in the system but i replaced the cap on the master andthat seems to have been the major problem. i thought the clutch or tranny had been injured from me literally slamming it into gear while it was acting up and driving it with barely any clutch action. but;picking my girlfriend up today, her younger brother was being picked up by a friend in a big 1500 dodge ram. long sotry short- i had to prove that the 4 banger had enough power/torque to get the job done. clutch grabbed and held enough for me to do a decent burnout in first and about half of second gear. even i was suprised. not bad for half the dispacement of his 5.7liter. and more than double the gas mileage

If it does it again replace your master cylinder Mine was good for about 2 weeks and started acting up again, it wasn't the cap lol
