shifting woes

I have a 90 YJ 5 speed. Largely it's been having trouble shifting into 1st and reverse. I checked the fluid level on the clutch master cylinder, it was empty, so I topped it off. That helped a little, but not completely. This morning I spun out and smoked a guardrail, and now it's VERY hard to change gears and almost impossible to put it in 1st. Any thoughts?

Bleed the clutch. You added fluid and you may have air in there preventing full engagement of the clutch. 1st gear had synchros so it should not be tough to engage at a stop or moving slowly.

I'm not sure I know how to link, but if this doesn't hyperlink, just cut and paste it into your browser.

Bleeding a clutch is just like bleeding your brakes. You'll need a helper but it's not hard.

My tranny started acting up when my clutch was going out. For me it was 3rd that was weird, I had to jam into third due to synchros not working right. Maybe replace the clutch if bleeding didn't work. I also changed my tranny fluid and fixed my synchro problem.

If you're having problems getting into 1st and R (I have that problem sometimes too) hold the clutch in and try throwing it in 5th and then R and the synchros should realign.
