Soft Top and Door Questions

Hey all,

My wife picked up a Jeep for me to work on the other and I have NEVER owned or worked on a Jeep so I am kind of lost. I have been browsing the www looking for some answers but I think this will be the best place for help.

My question is, what do I need to add to pic 1/3 to be able to install the soft top? What is in the pic is what I am working with, I have the actual soft top just nothing else.

Second question is, what "type" of door is in picture 2? I have seen about 10 different types of doors on the internet and I am not sure what this one is. My drivers side door is beat to crap, I am going to try and work it out, fill it, then spray it but I want to have a replacement lined up just incase. Thanks

Cody.

There are a few types of soft tops so we need to know if it is a factory style, a bestop style, or a frameless style. Each takes different frame hardware. Some explanation can be found on the quadratec website in the soft top section.

The doors look to be factory "half doors". They are available on the craigslist, but usually in a pair. Yours looks to be smashed pretty good. Just remove the nut on the hinge pin and lift them up to remove.

DREDnot, thanks for the reply. I don't know what type of soft top it is. I am currently deployed and my wife bought it as a surprise for me. I assume its a factory style but I really don't know.

Ok, I was thinking they were half doors but I wasn't sure. Thanks a lot!

In the pics, there is a lot of aftermarket stuff, so you need to lay out the top and look for and factory markings, or a bestop tag. Top passenger rear corner perhaps, or Chrysler symbols molded in the window vinyl. Get pics of the top , and any pics of any hardware, or bows will help in the ID process

DREDnot,

Being that I can only see pics and am not very familiar with Jeeps, what is aftermarket on it that you can see right away? I know that if I was home and actually looking at it I could figure it out, but I don't have the opportunity.

Also, I know that there is nothing else to see. What is physically on the Jeep is it, other than the soft top itself I have no hardware or bows. So once I find out which soft top I have will you guys be able to help me figure out what hardware and bows I need? Thanks.

Oh yea, that door is pretty smashed. My forte is body work though, more than likely I will end up ordering a new door. But I want to beat it straight and do some filler and then re-spray and see how it comes out. Mostly just for a learning experience. The body itself is pretty beat in there below the door but the frame is not bent, that will take some work but it'll get done.

Hopefully you have a frameless top which just uses the roll bars and the rails that are already on your tub. You would be good to go plus they're really cool tops! Do a search on rampage frameless top and check it out. There's another by softopper but its for yjs with full steel doors.

I was talking about the aftermarket "strapless" bikini top, and the windjammer. Makes it a possibility that they have the full top, also. Or that they are a cheap substitute for a good full top because the original is toast and wadded up in the back seat

Looks like your new purchase did not include your softop frame. With YJs you have 2 types. Quadratech sells the type A and type B softop frames. Google that for a little background. Good quality but a little pricey. Tiny bit off topic but I heard a rumor that Bestop manufactures the OEM tops and Chrysler puts their mark on them.

I heard that also. I think it was true for a while, if not still. I don't think it was the YJs at all, just some of the later TJ/LJs. If they were bestop, they were not the same quality as their aftermarket. OEM was built to a much better standard.

The Premium sailcloth tops are closest to the OEM sailcloth sunrider top my 05 LJ came with.

The best place I have found for a lot of parts is Craig's List, it is a matter of where you live and how much others want the same doors has to do with how much they go for in you area, I looked for three years and then someone list a set in real good Cond. for $250. and I jumped on them. they can cost $800., it's just where you are and what you find. Good Luck.

Well I finally got home from Afghanistan and was able to see what top I have. So its a bestop brand and it has snaps all around it. I know this is very vague, but what do I need to attach this to my jeep. No where on my jeep is there a spot to button the snaps into. Attached is a picture of the top. Thanks!
