Question soft top conversion

i have a YJ with a hard top and wan to know if anyone has converted on to a soft top. Also was there alot of extra hardware to purchase and install? And does some one make a full conversion kit? I have only found replacement tops.

There are a bunch of full top options for you. There are less expensive ones from companies like Pavement Ends. There are more expensive ones from Bestop (we like to think it's worth it). If you have a later model YJ, with the family style rollbar, you can also get "Frameless" style tops from a couple of our competitors.

My first suggestion would be visiting a site like Quadratec. They've got a nice "soft top advisor" thing. Their catalog is great too: I find it easier to browse through all the options when I'm looking at a print catalog.

Once you've narrowed your options down a bit, then this site is great for providing good feedback and opinions. Except for a couple of jerks who hate Bestop. (just kidding: you get valid feedback from a wide range of folks, and that's what makes it so great).

I bought a best top as my summer top. I got the one that would fit the full steel doors and never really had any problems with the top itself. The biggest problem is the window channels. They need to be screwed in and when you remove the top and put the hard top on, for the winter, or to tow a u-haul trailer (they won't rent to soft top Jeeps) you have to remove the screws and now you have holes. Holes that leak in the frame. Holes that the next time you putthe channels on you may need bigger screws because the holes strip out. Also the holes that hold the front of the hard top on do the same thing.

The rear door window also has a channel in the door, but that never need top removed even with the hardtop on.

Jeep Soft tops also take anywhere from 10-20 minutes to put up and down. just so you know.

Go with the Bestop. It will last you a lot longer. I would go with the factory style hardware. It looks better when you put the top down. I installed a soft top on my friends jeep that had no top at all when he bought it. We found the hardware used at a local 4x4 shop for $75 Can also find them in junk yards.
