Softtop Dye

I have a Spice Bestop that I want to be black. Has anyone done a successful dye job? What was your prep, what did you use, and did you have to use any protectant for a sealer?

Since nobody else has replied I 'll throw something out for you to consider. I have used Dupli-Color Vinyl and Fabric Coating on my seats and am very pleased with the results. This is my 26 year old cruddy dirty faded gray rear seat after I sprayed it. I did the fronts too but although they were gray too they were not original issue.

Working for a used car dealer for 25 years I have dyed a few convertible tops and I can tell you it is a whole lot different from dying seats. Dying tops if your lucky will last as long as it takes to sell the car its a different material and is exposed to the weather.I used the best professional dye available . Vynl tops will last a bit longer but it isnt permanent. You might as well paint it with latex house paint.

I dyed my spice top parts on my 89 yj black with the duplicolor venal dye and it came out great.
And all I did was clean them and spray them. Nothing else after that. That was last year and still black as can be

For the short money a can of Dupli-Color goes for I certainly would give it a shot. There is an area on my front seat that gets rubbed with me jumping in and out and when th gray starts to show I just spray that area and its perfect again. Definitely going to be better than spice.
