Exclamation Some 4WD Questions???

I have an 88 yj with a 4.2L in it. I recently started fixing little problems here and there but the 4WD seems to be the only issue left... i think. Before you read... just know that I'm a HOTROD kind of girl and this is my 1st 4WD and I'm trying to learn all I can and fix my JEEP myself.

Well it starts off that I reinstalled the vac resevior under the battery and hooked up the red line to the vac resevior and a vac source on the intake as well to the resevior.

I can get it into 4HI and it will stay and works perfectly fine.I put it back in 2HI (doesn't pop out or anything). When I try to put it in 4LO... if i wiggle the shifter it may work for a sec n then pop out or not engage. The 4WD light on the dash flickers while I'm wiggling the shifter but it wont stay in 4LO. I read in a few threads that it could be the shift motor or the actuator or there is a vac leak somewhere... UG... what should I be looking for?

I also have question about the posi-lok... when u install this in place of the vac system... do you still have 2H,4H & 4L... or do you not? I'm just asking because the description I found was vague and I would rather ask a JEEPER than anyone else... except for daddy, grandpa or my fiance'.

Thanx again

Yes you will still have all ranges all the pos-lock does is replace the vacuum motor on you're axle you engage pos-lock then select 4w hi or 4w low

I can Tell you if you hook up the posi lock Nothing changes you can still have dash light
indicator, and all you have to do is pull back lever to engage front axel

Best thing to do is go and get a manual at
Your local auto parts store, it will show what you need. Hope this helps.

O OK thanks. . What about the other stuff? The 4WD LO issue I'm having?

I have a manual already and it doesn't seem to help. All the info that I've found to fix my jeep has been from the forums

There is a vacuum valve on the transfer case shifter that engages the front axle shift motor you might check the vacuum lines there one may be split

Your 4L should be engaged by linkage. You need to check that it is not bent or in need of adjustment or loose and that it fully engages the TC into 4L.

If the 4x4 light is flickering then the vac switch on the TC is switching the vacuum on and off as you move the shift lever. This may cause the vac motor on the front axle to disengage and rengage as u move the lever. Hope this helps...

I am new to jeeps and am learning my self by reading posts.

definitely sounds like a linkage problem. I would check to see if something is broke or if a bolt has backed out. It is also possible that the linkage is bent. if your jeep has a body lift it is possible that the floor pan is interfering with the shifter pulling all the way back into 4 low. in that case you would need to probably cut the floor a little or bend the shifter forward a tad. it sounds like it's not completely engaging causing it to kick out

i got a body lift wit 0 problems so its most likely not that. U prob need to get under the truck and adjust the linakge a little. the 4wd doesnt really mean much b/c back when i had the vacuum the light would go on even when the front wasnt locked
