I am new to the forum and a new jeep owner. I am having a couple issues with my 91 wrangler 2.5. My passenger side d30 axle seal is leaking, my d30 pinion seal is leaking, ring and pinion has a little slop, and when I put it in 4 wheel high or low while driving there is a grinding noise coming from the front end. Transfer case is recently rebuilt shifts to 4 hi and low fine. I have posi lock. Once the grinding starts it keeps grinding while rolling whether I have the clutch in or its under power. Any help would be appreciated. I think I can do axle seals and pinion seal. But replacing the ring and pinion gear might b little out of my league. And I can't pin point the grinding.
I would look around junk yards and Craigslist for a replacement axle with the same gear ratio. It would be cheaper and easier than doing all the work you'll need on the old axke.
I'm not really looking for the easy road. For me this is a learning experience. I would rather fix it myself. I have always driven 70s for 4x4. I know them pretty well, but this jeep is giving me issues I never encountered before.
I changed gear oil, inspected gears, no metal shavings, posilock is engaging. Transfer case oil changed no shavings. Linkage adjusted. Not sure where else to look
I did yes, pulled the cover off, inspected everything. Everything looked ok, again no metal shavings.I am At a loss. Is there a sure way to make sure the posilock is engaging?
Yes. Put the front axle up on jackstands. Put the transfer case in 4wd. The front driveshaft should should not turn if you try to twist it by hand. Either front wheels should spin by hand easily while the opposite side tire is held.
Now engage the posi lock. If it is functioning properly, if you spin one front tire, the opposite side should turn in the opposite direction. If you hold one front tire, the opposite tire should not turn at all.
The collar slid easily yes, there is slop in the shift fork. I tore it all apart today and upon further inspection I'm thinking there is a lot wrong with theither d30, both axle shafts had play in them.
The shafts the collar slides onto to engage 4 wheel had in and out play, the passenger side had up and down play. This is my dd and only vehicle. I am starting to feel a little overwhelmed not knowing what is acceptable and what isnt
A little play is normal. Slop would be too much play.
How was the fork for range of movement? Did it move enough to cover the distance needed to slide the collar over completely? Im wondering if the posi lok is out of adjustment and only letting the collar just chatter on the edge of the splines, not sliding over enough to engage completely
The fork had some side to side play in it, I'm thinking that may be part of the issue, when I checked the fork travel it seemed to have the necessary travel to engage both shafts.
