spark, fuel, no start

i got a 87 2.5 and the starter will go and go and go and it sounds like its about to start but it never does, a mechanic told me it was the timing tensioner so i replaced that and the chain and it still wont start, im planning on double checking my work soon but i think it might be a sensor or relay or something i would like somone elses input thanks

If you are getting spark and fuel then your compression may be too low, which will mean a rebuild or new engine in your future. I accidentally killed a crank position sensor when I had to replace my transmission and it did the same thing, wouldn't hit a lick. You could check that. also check your timing. has anyone messed with the distributor? it could be out of time there. I would check compression first. you should have in the 125psi area.

if it was the cps would i still get spark? and yes i have messed with the distributor but not removed it i just loosened the bolt and spun it trying to mess with the timing but its back in the same position now and i guess ill check the compression tomorrow. but before when it was running it was bogging down to 500 at idle when it was normally between 1k and 1500 but it ran fine when it was at speed

The ignition control module on my '87 with the 4.2 went out on me, but I had no spark. Picked up a used one on eBay for $15, starts every time now and got rid of the initial 2 minute and intermittent stalling.

Crank position sensor tells the computer when to fire and spit fuel so it is very possible that the crank position sensor could keep it from running right. I have heard of several people having problems with the CPS.

I don't know anything about the 2.5, but my 4.2 ignition module went out. Quadra tech used to sell them. I don't know if they still do, I haven't looked at a cataloge in awhile. I had to take mine to the shop cause I didn't know what it was at the time. They got one from somewhere, I'm guessing the dealer.

I'm not sure if that's your problem, just commenting on where to get an ignition module.
