speedometer dosn't work..what should i check?

my speedometer has never worked since i got the jeep...other than the connections behind the speedometer...what else can i look for? i tried searching but i didn't come up with much

1988. 6 cylinder. i have no idea...i've never fixed a speedometer before.

My 93 stopped working and it was the sender on the tcase

Your speedometer is going to be mechanical I think. If not it still works the same way you just have a VSS(vehicle speed sensor) to deal with also. The cable runs from the back of the speedometer to the tail housing of the T-case.
