Speedometer gear help

The speedometer in my 87 YJ wasn't working, so I began to investigate. The cable seemed fine--could turn it and get the speedometer to register. So, I pulled the speedometer gear and I think I found the problem. As you can see in the pic, it's all torn up. I went online to order a new one, and none of the pics for new gears look at all like this one. Does this look like the right one to any of you?

I'm thinking, maybe a previous owner replaced the original gear with one that didn't fit right and that's why it got all mangled. I don't know for sure. So should I order one online that says its for an 87 YJ, or should I try to find another one like the one I pulled? This is off a 5 sp. BA 10/5 transmission. Does the automatic transmission look different?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if you have a 87 with the stock ba 10 trans then just order a stock gear and that should fix your problem

Since the gear is in the transfer case it depends on what case you have. That is not a NP231 case gear which is probably what you are seeing on line. Take a look and see what model transfer case you have and order one to fit it.

On the New Process cases there is a round metal tag screwed to the back of the case above the fill plug, it has the model and serial number stamped onto the tag.

there are two things that are important when getting a new one. tire size you run and length of the gear. look real close when buying the gear. and compare prices. some folks want $100 and some sell for around $25.

I have the NP207 "Command Trac" (oooohhhh) transfer case. Allegedly the worst one available. It was standard on the 87 model. I've found the part I need for $25. Thanks for all the help.
