Those are the AC vents, and sans AC, you won't have them. I have a '94 SE with no air, and it has the tilt wheel. The only time I've ever wished for AC was when stuck in traffic on a really hot, rainy, summer day on a return from a long road trip, full of gear and with the top up. between the heat, humidity and the radiant heat from the engine, travvy, Tcase and diffs, it was like sitting in a sauna.

My heat vents are just the two at the tranynhump, and the vent is a separate box all the way on the passenger side, pre-fan. I would expect that all three systems pull fresh air through the same vent, but as far as delivery issues, I don't know. In another vehicle, the output vent is usually selectable for whichever air you choose. In a jeep??? Hopefully someone with AC can chime in on this.

it will heat if you put the ac on its lowest setting(temperature wise)and the ac fan on high and turn your heater on high. the ac will pull hot air up from the floor and distribute it thru the ac vents. when i hunted in virginia i did just that to get dry and warm after a day in the cold and wet. it should even work with the ac pump disconnected.

Navychief, just to clarify, so the AC has its own fan, correct? I was unaware, but I guess it makes sense since you likely want to recirculate the already cooled air. Does it have a fresh air option?

no fresh air option. it just recirculates what is in the cockpit. with the little adjustable vents you can really move the air around. it has its own fan. otherwise you'd be required to have the heater on for ac to work. works good as a heat distribution system. i had it in my first jeep, a 90 2.5 5 speed. even with the top down you get enough ac to keep your lower parts cool.
