Squealing Belt!!!!! Help!

I have a 93 YJ.
The serp. belt is making a loud squealing sound when you first start up the jeep. Does the YJ have a tensioner? If not, how do I tighten up the belt?

The power steering pump is the tensioner, loosen all the pump bolts and there is an adjuster bolt on the side down low.

The power steering pump is on the left hand side (closest to the driver side) correct?

Idler pullys often scream on first start up when they start going bad

Done this many times you should have one belt that runs everything the power steering pump does the adjustment.

My jeep was doing this for a very long time and I fixed it and I'm not a mechanic.Ok,first buy a new good belt ,I went to AutoZone and bought a 39 dollar belt also buy brake cleaner.Remove the old belt and spray the brake cleaner on all the places the belt is suppose to run on and clean with a brillo pad.even if you think it's clean just spray and pass the pad.Let air dry and install new belt nice and tight .Problem solved

I had this problem for awhile. I took the belt off and changed the idler pulley. That fixed it for maybe an hour or two. Then I bought a gatorback belt from amazon put it on and have had no troubles since. I love it. If you are buying a belt, I'd suggest gatorback. I think I got mine for $25 and as far as I've read reviews on it it's once of the best you can get. Just my two cents.

Seriously all you need is a new belt. It's a pain in the butt to swap out but your squealing will disappear. Mine would squeal on start up because it was old and tired and cracking. Good as new with a new belt!

Many other little goodies!
Swap to a 4BT diesel in the future? Most likely.

I removed the four bolts that holds the power steering. One bolt acts as a swivel bolt, I just pulled the swivel bolt farther which tighten the serpentine belt. Then I propped a crow bar in between the belt and power steering while I mounted the four bolts back on. No more belt squealing!!!!!

I would still double check that the belt isnt too worn, it might break if its falling apart and now has more tension on it. Just my two cents if the ribs dont look cracked or rotted then you should be good with the tension adjustment.

I put on new belts about a year ago, it squeals maybe every 5th start. I would have expected a little stretch after a month, not after a year. How long should the Serp belt last?

Mine did that at start up but it was the water pump bearing going out.
