Starter grinding

Hello All:

This is my First post. I have a 87 Wrangler 6cy, w5 spd transmission (idk the model). This is my first jeep so this will be a nice learning experience for me.

I am having trouble starting the jeep. When trying to start i get this Horrible grinding noise. I looked in the Haynes repair manual I purchased, and it was pointing towards the starter/ flywheel area.
I crawled under the jeep and the first thig i noticed was that the lower starter mounting bolt was being held in by just a bolt, some washers and a nut. It appears that the lower mounting hole is broken/missing from the bellhousing. From what i could tell it there also appears to be small metal particles on both the teeth of the starter and the flexplate.

So my questions are,
1) Where can i get a new/used bellhousing from?
2) How hard is it to pull the trans/t-case back enough to remove the inspection plate and replace the bell housing?

I'm sure i will have more ??? This looks to be a great forum and I hope to enjoy many great forum days here .
THanks in Advance.

Ian

dropping the trans./transfer is no big deal and bell housings can be found very cheap on ebay or the junk yards.
but if the starter is bolted tight on the jeep and it just started making the noise
then you might just need a new starter.
and if you do you will find that the starters you buy from the auto parts store are rebuilt crap.
save yourself a lot of time and buy a good starter like the gear reduction starter i have on mine .
here is the link to it .

Hmm some of the starters for the jeep don't fit right, sometimes u have to grind some slots in it so it stops hitting the flywheel. I have 2 reg high torque starters, both with lifetime warranties. I blow a lot of starters so I just swap them out and exchange them at advanced auto parts when ever neccasary

My jeep used to turn every head in the parking lot when it started it was so loud. Not to mention I was going through starters once every 3 or so months for a while it sucked.

So my question to you is have you given your flywheel a good inspection? My flywheel teeth were almost pointed instead of having a nice flat top to them. I had to bite the bullet and replace mine. Note: If you do replace it and get one from CARQUEST ask for an '86 model flywheel for some reason there '87 flywheel is completely wrong. It doesn’t look anything like the original and it's too thick and will not allow your starter to disengage.
Good Luck!

THanks for the responses:

I will be hopefully this weekedend I will be doing the following:

1) Removing the bellhousing, and ID'ing said bellhousing
2) Inspecting the Flywheel
3) Fixing a few leaks
4) Finding a new collant res. over flow tank.
5) Inspecting the starter for worn teeth
6) taking a few pics and posting my progress

wish me luck...
