starter problem

first off i have a 90 yj with the 4.2, the starter had been acting up for a week or so. once in awhile it would not start so id get out and jump it across the solinoid, so then one day would not work, so i tapped on the starter and that made it go. so problem solved id go get a new starter. i get the starter put it in and go to start it nothing. im 100 percent sure its wired right hard to get wrong. so we started to trace through the wiring couldnt find anything so i put the relay on the fire wall in it still nothing. im fairly sure the igntion switch is good, and the batterys new. any ideas?

will the new starter work if you jump it?
mine wont start half the time with the key but if i jump it it will start every time.
i just ended up putting a remote starter button in. if thats the case it could be the ignition switch in the steering column

most likely its the ignition switch in the column. if you have a lot of keys on your keychain it can mess it up. its like 10 bucks at autozone.

no its not the drum that messed up, in the column there is a rod that connects the tumblers to a switch farther down in the column, if anything itd be the switch

When the jeep won't start have someone turn the key to start position and see if you have power to the relay with a test light or volt meter.(i would assume you do if you can jump it and get it to crank)but if for some reason you don't then go backwards from there.Ignition sounds likely.
