Starter/Solenoid question?????

Ok, Jeep is 89 YJ with 2.5 L TBI. 5 Sp.

It won't start, starter is not working. Just want to make sure I am not missing anything else to check before I replace the starter. or the engine with a 350 SB for all you 4 banger haters.

Last couple of weeks it seemed like the starter would take a second or two before it would engage slow crank then kick in. I figured haven't been using it much so battery was maybe a little drained.

A few days ago had a real hard time starting like battery was low, starter clicked a couple of times then kicked in and engine turned over and ran fine. Now nothing. Tried jump start and charging battery nothing!!

When key is turned to start you can hear some sort of a humm and something electrical is cycling through, jumped the solenoid ignition terminal to battery and same cycle/humm noise is heard. It's not the tell tale click of the solenoid engaging. Tried same thing including jumping battery to cable to starter, and jumping ignition terminal, same noise.

Is that humm noise the solenoid enaging and the starter is just done? or am I missing something else? Not a big fix but just want to make sure i covered all the basics before I start replacing parts.

Any suggestions??? besides the 350 swap.

I would test it, jumper the starter at the starter, personally it sounds like the bendix spring in your starter has failed, and you need to replace your starter.

That's what i figured just wanted to see if there is anybody that could think of anything I missed trying.

Anybody have any thoughts on the Mean Green Starters? They are almost twice the cost of a direct replacement. Is it worth it?
